Chapter Sixteen

The final notes of the rehearsal faded away, leaving a buzz of chatter in their wake. Angie and Dmitri waited patiently outside Azzura's old dressing room, the air thick with anticipation. Azzura rounded the corner, her face flushed from the exertion of practice.

"How'd it go?" Angie asked, falling into step beside her friend as they entered her dressing room.

Azzura shrugged, a wry smile playing at her lips. "As well as can be expected, I suppose. It's strange, being back on stage after... everything."

Dmitri wound his way between their legs, his tail swishing with curiosity. Angie reached down to scratch behind his ears, her mind already racing with questions.

As Azzura began to remove her stage makeup Angie took a seat in what was once Paulina's vanity chair "So what has everyone been saying? You know, from the cast and crew gossip?"

Azzura's eyes lit up. "Actually, I have picked up on a few things. It's amazing what people will say when they think no one's listening."

"Apparently, Natalie and Paulina had a huge fight the day before the murder. I mean, bigger than usual. Something about Paulina threatening to have Natalie fired."

Angie's eyebrows shot up. "Really? Did anyone overhear what it was about?"

Azzura shook her head. "Not the specifics, no. But word is, Paulina had been going around saying that she for sure got the lead before the castlist came out. She apparently kept saying that the role will give a much-needed boost to her career. She was always talking about how she deserved the role after all of her hard work for the theater."

"Interesting," Angie mused, her mind whirling with possibilities. "Anything else?"

"Well," Azzura hesitated, biting her lip. "There's been some talk about Rosina. People think it's weird how quickly she moved on to working for Kelani."

Azzura's eyes widened as she seemed to remember something. "Also Leonora said that Rosina confided in her one day during one of Paulina's meltdowns. Leonora said that Rosina told her that she is desperate to get out of this job and when Leonora suggested that she quit, Rosina started acting weird and said that she feels like that isn't an option."

Dmitri's ears perked up at this, his tail twitching with interest. Angie nodded, encouraging Azzura to continue.

"Some of the crew members swear they saw Rosina sneaking around backstage just before the murder as well. But no one can agree on exactly where or when. Most people say that she seemed to be trying to take phone calls, but others say she seemed to just be acting suspicious altogether."

Angie frowned, processing this new information. "That does sound suspicious."

Angie leaned forward, her brow furrowing in concentration. "What about physical evidence? Has anyone heard of or seen any clues left behind that might point to the killer?"

Azzura sighed, shaking her head. "Not much, from what I've heard. The prop frying pan was the murder weapon, but that's about it. No fingerprints, no DNA, nothing else left behind."

Dmitri's tail swished back and forth, his green eyes narrowing. He meowed softly, as if to say, "That's convenient.
